New Zealand Football have appointed Johanna Wood as their first female President today.

As New Zealand's governing body convened today for their annual meeting, Wood was voted in by the other members of NZF's executive committee, stepping up from the vice-president role she's held since October.

Wood has previously worked as a board member of Central Football, chairing the organisation from 2010.

Speaking to 1 NEWS today, Wood spoke of her delight and pride at becoming New Zealand Football's first female president.

"It's a huge honour isn't it, and another responsibility," she said.

"I'm incredibly proud of where I am today, and I know my father would be, who's no longer with us.

Wood is also out to break into the 'boy's club' of New Zealand Football, with the culture having been slammed during last year's independent review.

"It's time now for the game to move forward, to look at the diversity and move forward."

Wood's first job as president will be to oversee the appointment of a new CEO to be made next month.
