Not everyone's happy with the Government's ban on military style semi-automatic guns.

An article in Fishing and Outdoors magazine written by Rhys Smith called Prime Minister Jacinda Adern "dumb-as-a-plank", and Police Minister Stuart Nash her "lapdog".

Mr Smith appeared on Seven Sharp tonight and sidestepped the comments he made when asked if it was the right time to be attacking Ms Ardern.

"She (Ms Ardern) needs to Google it, if you talk about prohibition you need to be very careful, if you look at Israel they did a prohibition and ran out of guns so just popped down to the basement to build some.

"As a result of that we had Uzis, so do we really want New Zealanders to take matters into their own hands and start building them, no," Mr Smith said.

When pressed on the fact most New Zealanders support the gun ban Mr Smith again said prohibition doesn't work.

"As soon as they put the ban in they lose actual gun control because people can build them and hide them illegally, if you want to keep control you need to know where they are and whose got them and let people use them lawfully," he said.

Mr Smith also believes sportsmen and hunters have been wrongly targeted by the ban considering it was a terrorist attack and "we didn't do it."
