A 25-year-old man has been taken into police custody following the alleged robbery of several vehicles north of Wellington this morning, followed by a police pursuit.
During the first robbery, which occurred in Champion Street in Porirua at around 7.30am, a person was attacked and received injuries to the face, authorities said.
The man then took the victim’s vehicle and travelled north on State Highway 1, according to police.
He is also accused of stealing another two vehicles in the Raumati area after the first incident - one in Poplar Avenue and another in the Raumati Beach shopping area.
Police said a pursuit was initiated due to the driver's failure to stop and concerns for public safety.
"In order to bring the vehicle to a stop spikes were deployed," police explained in a statement.
The vehicle was stopped on SH1 near Peka Peka at around 9.30am and the man was arrested. He will appear in Porirua District Court tomorrow.
During the incident, Wellington Free Ambulance paramedics were called to a motor vehicle accident involving police in Rauamti at 8.35am.
Two patients with minor injuries and one patient in a moderate condition were treated. They were all transported to Wellington Hospital.
As a result of the incident, there are delays on the Kapiti Expressway and police advise motorists to allow extra time for their travel.
