Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has been officially welcomed to China by Premier Li Keqiang this afternoon.

There were scenes of pomp and pageantry as Ms Ardern arrived at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

Ms Ardern and Premier Li paused while the anthems of both nations were played by a brass band before inspecting a military guard.

They then met in a large room where Premier Li offered his condolences over the Christchurch terrorist attack and stated China wants to strengthen its ties with New Zealand.

He also hopes the meeting will ensure a more open and "transparent" business environment between the two nations.

Ms Ardern is in China for a whirlwind visit that saw her attend the opening of a New Zealand Embassy in Beijing before meeting leadership for high-level talks.
