A St John spokesperson has appeared on Seven Sharp to give some helpful hints on what to do if your child begins choking.

It comes after a story on TVNZ1's Sunday on March 31 highlighted the case of Neihana Renata who choked on a piece of apple that his family says should never have been given to him at an early childhood centre.

The 22-month-old suffered brain damage after the incident.

So what do you do if your child begins to choke?

"If your baby is choking the first thing you are going to do is phone an ambulance on 111," a St John spokesperson says.

"You're then going to sit down and supporting the head and the neck lay them across your knees and give five quite hard back blows between the shoulder blades, checking to see if the item has dislodged after each blow.

"Once you have done five back blows, if they're still choking you will turn them over and holding them on your knees give them five chest thrusts in the middle of the chest.

"Repeat these two steps until they stop choking, or, if they become unresponsive then begin to administer CPR on the floor."

Similar steps apply for a toddler or older child using different positions of them sitting on your knees.
