Crusaders coach Scott Robertson is hailing the comeback of All Blacks captain Kieran Read to Super Rugby, following his triumphant return in last night's 32-8 win over the Hurricanes in Wellington.

Having not played any rugby since last year's All Blacks end of year tour, Read returned to action last night, playing the first half of the Crusaders' emphatic win in Wellington.

Speaking to media afterwards, coach Robertson hailed the impact of Read, helping the Crusaders recover from a shock loss in Sydney last week.

"I thought he was going to ease himself into the game," he said.

"But in that first five, ten minutes the amount of touches and tackles, and influences he had on it was pretty impressive.

"Straight into it, and I think that's a real credit to him, and the amount of work that he's done after a long period of time with his back.

"I find it incredible guys like Sam [Whitelock] and Kieran can play at such a high level after being out for so long and having not played a game. It just shows how world class athletes they are."
