A toddler has died in Auckland's Starship Hospital after being critically injured in Tauranga.

Police say the 17-month-old child was "critically injured in Tauranga on Wednesday March 27" and has died at Starship Hospital today.

Police are investigating the cause of the injuries and the circumstances leading up to the incident, and were conducting inquiries in the Maungatapu area yesterday.

A number of people are cooperating with police inquiries, according to a press release this evening.
