The Warriors' clash with the Manly Sea Eagles in Christchurch tomorrow will be an important step in the city's recovery from the March 15 terrorist attack, Prime Minister Jacinda Arderns says.
After a gunman opened fire on two separate Christchurch mosques leaving 50 people dead and dozens more injured, the city will host its first major sporting event this weekend, with Manly hosting the Warriors in their annual clash.
Speaking to media yesterday, the Prime Minister hailed the importance of the fixture in allowing Christchurch to properly heal from the devastating attacks.
"When it comes to that NRL match, the ability to come together in times like this, to be able to form a community - whether it's around sport or anything else - I think is an important part of recovery," Ms Ardern said.
Security concerns were also addressed by the Prime Minister, with an increased police presence promised by promoters.
"Safety is our priority and a focus," Ms Ardern said.
"With gatherings such as that, there is a responsibility on the organisers. But at the same time, police are doing all they can to ensure the safety of New Zealanders across a range of different events."
The Warriors face the Sea Eagles tomorrow afternoon at AMI Stadium.
