'Umpires should have their eyes open' - Virat Kohli fumes after huge no-ball missed on final delivery

March 29, 2019

A controversial final delivery has seen the Mumbai Indians take a six-run victory over the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL this morning, after the umpires missed a glaring no-ball.

With the Royal Challengers needing seven runs for victory off the final ball of the match, and six runs to send the game to a super-over, Shivam Dube could only dig out a Lasith Malinga yorker down to long-on, giving the Indians victory.

However, TV replays showed that Malinga overstepped with his final ball, which should have resulted in an extra delivery and bonus run for the Royal Challengers, changing the equation to six runs from one ball.

Instead though, the umpires had deemed that the match was over, giving the Indians victory by six runs.

Speaking afterwards, Royal Challengers captain Virat Kohli was left fuming with the incident that had cost his side a chance at victory.

"We are playing at IPL level, not club cricket - that's just a ridiculous call off the last ball," Kohli told commentator Ian Bishop.

"The umpires should have their eyes open, it was a no-ball by an inch.

"It's a completely different game altogether. If it's a game of margins, I don't know what's happening. They should have been more sharp and more careful out there."

Earlier, the Indians posted 187/8 from their 20 overs, with an onslaught from former South African batsman AB de Villiers getting the Royal Challengers close.

From just 41 balls, de Villiers belted 70 runs not out at a strike rate of over 170, with four fours and six sixes.

The Royal Challengers were left needing 17 runs from the final over, bowled by Malinga, with Dube hitting the first ball for six, leaving 11 needed from five.

To his credit though, Malinga would hold his nerve, his next five balls going for just four runs, before the controversial end to an otherwise enthralling game.

The win gave Mumbai their first victory of the season, lifting the Indians off the foot of the IPL ladder, while Bangalore are still yet to taste success in 2019, winless from their opening two matches.
