During today's National Remembrance Service for the victims of the Christchurch terrorist attack a survivor has explained why he choose to forgive the gunman for killing his wife.

Farid Ahmed’s wife Husna died trying to rescue him during the attack on the Al Noor mosque on Deans Ave on March 15.

Mr Ahmed spoke at the memorial service today thanking New Zealanders for their togetherness and support and also explaining why he forgave the gunman for his heinous act.

"I’d like to thank New Zealanders for coming together to show the world that New Zealand is a peaceful country."

"I have chosen peace, I have chosen love, and I have forgiven," said Ahmed, who was wounded in the attack.

"I do not hate (the accused) - I cannot hate him, I cannot hate anyone."
