Motorcyclist dies after crashing on SH2 in Upper Hutt

A male motorcyclist has died at the scene of a crash in Upper Hutt tonight.

Emergency services were notified that a motorcyclist had crashed on State Highway 2 at Kaitoke around 8.20pm.

Police say the rider, who was reported to be in a critical condition after the crash, has died at the scene near Marchant Road.

The Serious Crash Unit is examining the scene and the road may be closed for some time, police say in a statement released about 9.45pm.

Motorists should avoid the area, the statement says.
