Friends in shock as Sydney teen dies after suspected accidental drug overdose - 'the most one-off thing'

January 31, 2019

Friends of a popular teenager have been left in shock after she died from a suspected accidental party drug overdose in Sydney on the weekend.

Marli Cartmer-Congiu, 18, completed her final school exam in November and was planning a dream trip around Europe with friends this year before tragedy struck.

The teenager is suspected to have died after experimenting with the party drug "liquid G," a form of liquid ecstasy, at a party in Sydney's east on Saturday night, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Friends say it was out of character for Ms Cartmer-Congiu to experiment with the drug.

"Everyone is in shock. She had never done this before, it was the most one-off thing," school friend Zoe Koster told The Sydney Morning Herald.

"Most people get to learn from their mistakes, but she just made one mistake and that's it."

Ms Cartmer-Congiu was rushed from the house party to hospital where she died, after being found unresponsive in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Her death comes as an inquest has been launched by the NSW Coroners Court after five drug-related deaths at NSW music festivals in five months.

Former boyfriend Gully Thomas was devastated when he heard news of Ms Cartmer-Congiu's death via a phone call on Sunday.

"I went straight to the hospital to say goodbye to her. It was the hardest thing I've ever done. Seeing her in the hospital ... it was really traumatic," he said.

Mr Thomas is now planning on surfing 1000 waves to try and raise $10,000 to fundraise for the hospital where Ms Cartmer-Congiu received treatment.

The party drug Liquid G is a colourless and odourless liquid that has a range of side effects and can lead to death.
