The album was released in May 1970 - several months after the band had broken up.

Announced on The Beatles' Twitter account, the surviving members of the band said the footage was intended for a television special but "organically turned into something different".

"The 55 hours of never-before-seen footage and 140 hours of audio made available to us, ensures this movie will be the ultimate 'fly on the wall' experience that Beatles fans have long dreamt about," Sir Peter said, according to The Beatles. "I was relieved to discover the reality is very different to the myth.

"It's simply an amazing historical treasure-trove."

Sir Peter described working with the band members as fascinating, funny, uplifting and surprisingly intimate.

The same technique of re-ingesting, re-editing and retouching will be used on the new Beatles film.

The name of the film and release date have not yet been announced.
