Spare a thought for outdoor workers as the hot spell continues across New Zealand, though many of them are taking all necessary precautions in near-record temperatures.

Several regions hit highs of more than 30C today, and those working in the heat have been doing what they can to escape it.

In Tauranga, builders, road workers and scaffolders needed spells from the searing heat.

Downer Power and Gas workers were busy repairing cables in Tauranga.

Their supervisor, Ted Glasgow, told 1 NEWS sunblock, iced water and breaks were the order of the day.

"We've encouraged them to sunblock, iced water - all trucks must have iced water on - and encourage them to get out of the sun 10 minutes every hour or so to cool off, bring their core body temperature down, just so rational decision making carries on during the day," he said.

"The heat's really starting to get to them a little bit after day four now. So we've just told them, more breaks, get in the utes for a bit of air conditioning and watch each other, monitor hydration, iced water.

"That's just what's got to happen. Safety's safety," Mr Glasgow said.

"If we start pushing them too hard in the heat people make mistakes. And we can't have that."

And the warm spell is not done yet, with more hot days on the horizon this week.
