Breast might be best for babies but getting feeding underway can be a struggle.

In Auckland there's a network of mums helping each other out by donating breast milk to those in need.

Mother's Milk Charitable Trus t is run by mum-of-twins Emma Ryburn-Phengsavath.

"Most people thought it was gross, I mean cow's milk comes from a dirty udder, like hello!" Ms Ryburn-Phengsavath told TVNZ1's Seven Sharp.

There were already human milk banks in Christchurch, but not in our largest city.

Ms Ryburn-Phengsavath's new Auckland milk bank has already been helping Kiwi mums, like Zelda Thompson whose milk supply had gone and she discovered her daughter was intolerant to gluten and dairy.

After trying almost every formula out there, her search led her back to her own species.

"The relief was epic," Ms Thompson said after finding breast milk donors through the Auckland milk bank.

The goal is now to see community breast milk banks across New Zealand.
