'The most difficult week in my career' - Cardiff boss reveals emotional toil of Sala disappearance

January 29, 2019

Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock has opened up about the devastating tragedy suffered by his side, after club record signing Emiliano Sala disappeared over the English Channel last week.

Sala, 28, and pilot David Ibbotson are yet to be found by search and rescue crews. However, both are feared dead with no trace of the light aircraft.

Addressing media before his side's Premier League clash with Arsenal, Warnock - a veteran of over 40 years in football management - was almost lost for words in describing the impact of the tragedy.

"You think 24 hours a day about whether to carry on," Warnock told reporters.

"It's impossible to sleep...It's been by far the most difficult week in my career, by an absolute mile.

"It's been a traumatic week and even now I can't get my head around the situation."

At just under $29 million, Sala was Cardiff's all-time record signing, with Warnock saying the news had impacted the other members of the playing squad.

"It's been noticeable that three of four lads have been really poor. It's unknown territory. Things like this just don't happen."

Cardiff and Arsenal will not wear arm bands in their clash tomorrow at the request of Sala's family, instead opting to lay daffodils on the Emirates Stadium pitch.
