Hillside scrub fire closes SH1 north of Wellington

A hillside scrub fire has closed State Highway 1 at Pukerua Bay, north of Wellington, tonight.

Police say they're assisting Fire and Emergency NZ and were called to the scene at around 8.06pm.

Traffic is being diverted over the Paekākāriki Hill Road but the diversion is not suitable for heavy vehicles.

Motorists are being advised to avoid the area if possible as delays are expected.

Fire and Emergency says seven appliances are in attendance and they were still working to extinguish the fire 40 minutes after receiving the call.
