Heavy rain and the chance of thunderstorms and hail are in store for the upper North Island today.
MetService says a series of troughs move across the northern half of the North Island during the morning, bringing a low risk of thunderstorms.
There's a moderate risk of thunderstroms about the southeast of Northland, eastern parts of Auckland, the Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Plenty. These thunderstorms may produce localised rainfall rates of 10 to 25mm/hr and small hail.
It’ll be mostly fine in the lower North Island until the afternoon when wet weather is forecast to move into Kapiti.
In the South Island most of Canterbury is in store for a fine day but Kaikoura and Blenheim could see rain tonight.
Dunedin and Oamaru’s cloud will clear for a sunny afternoon, but Invercargill, Queenstown, Alexandra and Invercargill could see showers around lunch.
