An architect's award-winning family hideaway in Hanmer Springs could be the perfect reinvention of the time-honoured Kiwi tradition of camping.

Seven Sharp reports the Allfrey family wanted a place that brought them together, so they turned to their favourite architect - husband and Dad, Cymon Allfrey.

He drew a home comprising three pods. Two main pods together mirror each other, while a third, separate pod houses a generous bunk room and also acts as a sun dial. The three pods are arranged around a communal courtyard.

There's no cooktop in the kitchen which Mr Allfrey said was "a deliberate idea to get people outside to use the barbecue".

"It challenges most people's views on how a home works," he said.

And although the pitch of the roof evokes the pitch of your tent, the biggest inspiration was place.

"The idea is that it takes its cues from the mountain range around us, where every peak is slightly different."

Even the yellow on the building is a nod to nature, referencing the broom growing on the surrounding hills.
