Parliament is a unique place to work with "high-pressure, high-stakes, big egos", says 1 NEWS political editor Jessica Mutch McKay.

It comes after the Speaker launched an independent inquiry into bullying and harassment at Parliament.

Mr Mallard said earlier this week they want to "proactively" find out how to improve the Parliamentary workplace.

"Incidents have occurred over many years in these buildings which are unacceptable," he said.

On this week's episode of Inside Parliament, Mutch McKay discussed the inquiry with political reporter Maiki Sherman.

"[Parliament] is set up so that if you don't want to leave and go and get fresh air, you don't need to. There's a gym, there's a pool, there's restaurants, there's a cafe. This is a 24 hour, seven days a week place," Mutch McKay said.

"A lot of the staff here are high-pressure, high-stakes, big egos.

"Perhaps similar to law firms, you see that pressure-cooker environment and that creates the perfect storm for bullying and harassment."

Mutch McKay said it was not an excuse, "but you can see how it happens".

She discussed with Sherman about how many MPs come into Parliament without having any past experience managing people, an issue that will need to be addressed.

The review would take place over the next few months, with the findings to be released after.
