Driver who crashed while fleeing police in Rotorua dies

A man who sustained critical injuries after attempting to flee police in Rotorua during a late-night chase has died from his wounds.

Police said this morning the 24-year-old died from his injuries in Waikato Hospital.

At about 10:50pm on Thursday night, the man was caught speeding on Ford Road and failed to stop for police, who then initiated a pursuit.

Road spikes were put in place, but the sole occupant suffered head injuries before reaching them because he crashed into a tree on Malfroy Road near a school.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing and the incident has been referred to the Independent Police Conduct Authority.
