Police have revealed the two people killed in the two-vehicle crash south of Tokoroa on Monday were international students studying in New Zealand.
Bikramjit Singh, 22, and Mukul Jaglan, 21, were Indian nationals studying in New Zealand, police said.
Taupo Area Road Policing Group Senior Sergeant Fane Troy says the Serious Crash Unit investigation into the cause of the fatal crash is ongoing.
"It is too early to say what caused this tragedy but all aspects will be look into, police would like to remind all drivers to be aware of their surroundings and drive to the conditions," he said.
The collision took place on State Highway 1 near Ohakuri shortly after 5pm and left a third person critically injured.
Police confirmed the person remains in a critical condition in Waikato Hospital while the two people in the other vehicle involved only received minor injuries.
