NZ First MP Shane Jones spoke about taking exception to National deputy Paula Bennett over her previous comments about MP Jami-Lee Ross.

On Q+A's segment Te Tari [The Office], the Regional Economic Development Minister was asked by reporter Whena Owen about speaking out about the culture of Parliament.

It comes after Ms Bennett made comments about Mr Ross' behaviour as a married man. Mr Jones then told NZ Herald that "marriage discussions in politics are a quagmire".

"I spoke out and I took exception to Paula Bennett," he told Owen.

"I was basically saying, 'You might be dominating part of your parliamentary crowd but don't play those dominatrix tricks with me'.

"Tricks of domination... Because people do get hurt. I've been through causing family pain to various women.

"Unless you're actually inordinately off the reservation, judge me and focus on how well I'm doing as a professional politician.

"I just felt that was an episode she went too far and deserved to be called for it."

Owen also asked about any succession plans Mr Jones had in NZ First.

"Those matters lie in a tapu area, otherwise known - the caucus. One doesn't stray into tapu areas for fear of some taniwha in the form of a 73-year-old leader eating you alive."
