A New Zealand man shot in the US when allegedly trying to enter a teenager's home has appeared in court, where he was charged by the FBI.

Duct tape, a knife and pepper spray were found in Troy Skinner's backpack after he tried to enter the property in Goochland, Virginia, in June.

He was shot by the mother of a 14-year-old girl he was trying to meet, having travelled from New Zealand to meet her.

He was facing a charge of entering a dwelling with intent to commit murder, rape, robbery or arson, but was now facing charges of production of child pornography and coercion and enticement.

He appeared in the Goochland County General District Court overnight.

The state charges have been dropped and Skinner will be transferred to federal custody.
