Outpouring of support after Christchurch cafe's 'well-loved' black and white cat died after dog attack

October 29, 2018

A Christchurch cafe is in mourning after one of their much loved cats was attacked by a husky on Friday night.

Antigua Boats Sheds' cat Maxine was the costumers 'pet away from home.'

The owner of the cafe, Mike Jones, said costumers were ‘shocked’ and ‘horrified’ to learn what had happened to their black and white cat.

He got a phone call on Friday at 9:30pm from the owners of the dog.

“They were very remorseful and they waited for me to get down there with my wife.”

“Maxine was well-loved by costumers, she was their pet away from home.

“She has been a part of the furniture for 14 years," he said.

Maxine along with another cat called Rocko were found by Mr Jones as strays.

"We fed them from birth and they just stayed around."

Rocko died five years ago from unknown causes.

They had a ceremony for Maxine on Saturday afternoon after the cafe closed.

“We buried her in the garden by the top deck so she can enjoy the sun.

"We will miss her cheeky personality and the Sheds won't be the same without her."

People have been quick to share their memories of Maxine on the cafe's Facebook page.

Phillipa Morrison says, "Aw this is terrible news, she was such a cool cat and I enjoyed seeing her everyday living at Ranui last year, made me miss my pets at home less."

Another costumer Lynley McEvedy says, "Sorry to hear Mike and Sal, Maxine was such a special part of your shed and the cafe furniture."
