Government received advice on replacing rego system, but won't proceed right now

Phil Twyford says the Government is committed to improving the lives of renters in New Zealand.

The Government received advice about replacing the vehicle licensing system (rego), but decided to not go forward with the idea.

A spokesperson for Phil Twyford said the advice to the Transport Minister "looked at a few different ways to replace the system while still collecting the necessary data and raising the same amount of revenue", after Mr Twyford was critical of the system while in Opposition.

However, he said the advised options needed to be explored further.

"The Government's focus right now is delivering on a number of urgent commitments, so the Minister has decided not to proceed with this work at this time."

Mr Twyford told Stuff he was concerned that the system clogged up the justice system due to the high number of those who did not pay their fee on time, saying it cost people "a disproportionate amount of time and money for a minor offence".

Ministry of Transport manager Marian Willberg advised Mr Twyford a fuel tax increase would be an option to replace the funds for the rego fees, or charging motorists for using high-demand roads, reported Stuff.
