The South Island's first KiwiBuild development has been announced for Wanaka, with 211 homes to be built over the next two years, housing minister Phil Twyford announced today in a statement.

Ballots will open on October 8 for the first 10 homes in the Northlake development.

Mr Twyford said KiwiBuild is "restoring the Kiwi dream of home ownership" for thousands of families priced out of the housing market in the Queenstown Lakes district across the country.

"For first-home buyers who have been locked out of the market, KiwiBuild is providing the chance to buy an affordable modest, starter home in one of the most beautiful parts of New Zealand.”

The Northlake development, which will be adjacent to the Wanaka township, will boast a master-planned community comprised of 800 homes with its own village centre, shops, playground, childcare and healthcare centres, eateries and small business office space.

The first 10 KiwiBuild homes to be balloted include four two-bedroom and six three-bedroom modern standalone homes, all fully landscaped and with off-street parking, as well as a Fisher and Paykel home appliance package.

Prices for the homes will range from $565,000 to $650,000.

Only eligible, pre-qualified buyers may enter the ballots for the Northlake apartments.
