'They're definitely getting better all the time' - All Blacks wary of in-form Pumas despite being favourites

September 29, 2018

Previous records mean nothing to either side as the All Blacks prepare for their tough challenge in Argentina tomorrow morning.

Looking to bounce back from their shock loss to the Springboks, New Zealand will have to overcome a spirited Pumas side who are riding their best ever start to a Rugby Championship.

The Argentines have already beaten the Springboks and the Wallabies in this year's championship and ran the All Blacks close for most of their Test in Nelson.

It has stand-in skipper Sam Whitelock taking notice.

"They've had a couple of great wins and they're definitely getting better all the time as we know they have been,” he said.

“So, for us, we're aware of that and we've got to go out there and play really well. Otherwise, the game won't go the way we want it to."

The All Blacks go into Sunday morning's fixture as strong favourites - history, and statistics will dictate that - but there's no point telling Pumas captain Agustin Creevy

"I saw the statistics but I don't pay a lot of attention. We're thinking about tomorrow's game.

“We are thinking about ourselves and how to beat them."

And it would be an historic moment if Argentina are able to do it.

Beating the All Blacks is something they haven't managed in 27 Tests.

The All Blacks are hoping to make No.28 the same so there is expected to be a strong focus on the set piece.

Argentina have statistically the worst scrum in the competition - a 75 per cent success rate to the All Blacks’ 100.

But Whitelock won't let the numbers cloud their judgement.

"Argentina have always had a good scrum, good lineout maul and we saw in Nelson, they cut us open by playing to their strengths.

“So they have good set piece and they opened us up from that, so if we can put pressure on them there hopefully that can nullify their game."

The All Blacks could win the Rugby Championship with a bonus point win, but they also have another driving motivator - they've never lost back-to-back games under Steve Hansen.
