Former Chiefs coach Dave Rennie says the All Blacks' 36-34 defeat to South Africa in Wellington two weeks ago will serve as the perfect wake up call, as Steve Hansen's side build towards an attempt at a third straight Rugby World Cup.

Going into the clash in the capital two weeks ago, Steve Hansen's side had the chance to lock the Rugby Championship away against a seemingly wounded South African side.

Instead, the Springboks defied the form book, taking out a 36-34 win - their first on New Zealand soil since 2009.

Now coaching Glasgow Warriors in Scotland, Rennie says that the loss will only make the All Blacks better, in preparation for next year's World Cup in Japan.

"Perfect timing. I think the All Blacks have traditionally been the best side in the world for three years and then got tipped up in a World Cup," Rennie said.

"I think this time a year out from the World Cup last time they got tipped over as well and it's just a good reminder for them.

"They won't be too upset by it, but they'll know they'll have to be at their best each week and if you are a couple of colts off you can get rolled. So, good timing I reckon.

"They have got a very smart coaching group, they have a lot of high-quality players, I am sure they have learned a few things from that game."

The All Blacks are next in action against Argentina in Buenos Aires tomorrow.
