Road closed after Auckland motorist accused of fleeing police slams into power pole

Auckland's Mt Wellington Highway's junction with Hamlin Road is closed this morning after a driver crashed into a power pole while allegedly fleeing from police.

The driver sustained moderate injuries and has been taken to hospital. A passenger in the car, however, fled the scene before injuries could be assessed, police said. 

The two were initially stopped by police on Te Horeta Road around 5am. After initially speaking with police, the driver then drove off with officers following, authorities said. 

Motorists are asked to avoid the area. Diversions are currently in place.
