Two member of a Taupo gang have been arrested and charged after an attempted armed robbery and high speed chase through the town.
Police said the attempted robbery took place at a reserve on Wairakei Drive on August 28 about 10.30am.
Two armed men tried to rob a man and a woman who were parked in their vehicle at the reserve, but the pair drove away at speed, fearing for their safety.
The gang members then pursued the pair at high speed in their car, and the two vehicles travelled through Taupo "in a dangerous and reckless manner," Detective Sergeant Andy Livingstone said.
Rotorua police began investigating and arrest warrants were issued for the two men, aged 43 and 51, on Tuesday morning.
The pair were arrested the same day during searches conducted by police and the Armed Offenders Squad.
They appeared at Rotorua District Court yesterday and are due to appear again on November 30.
Police said more charges are likely to follow, and they are keen to hear from anyone who saw the incident happening, or from anyone who has any information they think could be relevant.
