The scheme in Japan was launched in September and has already encouraged four people to quit smoking.

Two men have been accused of stealing NZ$7.5 million-worth of cigarettes from a Sydney warehouse.

Police yesterday arrested a 46-year-old man in Prestons and a 44-year-old man in Merrylands following the suspected theft of cigarettes from a warehouse in Alexandria in April.

Officers seized about 1550 cartons of cigarettes, $270,000 in cash and two utes during raids of several businesses and homes across southwestern Sydney.
