Watch: Counties bulldoze through Magpies to score game-winner in final minutes of epic Mitre 10 Cup contest

September 2, 2018

Counties Manukau have claimed their first win of the 2018 Mitre 10 Cup season after a wild second half against Hawke's Bay this afternoon.

Despite holding a 10-7 lead at halftime, the Magpies failed to hold out for a win at McLean Park going down to the Steelers 25-29.

They looked like they had done enough after Tiaan Falcon kicked a penalty with seven minutes to take a 25-22 lead but Counties struck back three minutes later thanks to a superb running passage.

The play was finished by Matiaha Martin after he managed to power over the lane near the posts, firing his hand in the air to celebrate as teammates swarmed him to celebrate.

Despite the win, Counties are still firmly at the bottom of the Premiership ladder with just one victory in their first four games this year.

Hawke's Bay are in better stead, still holding on to the top of the Championship standings with today's loss being their first in 2018.
