Health experts allege conflict of interest in tobacco tax review

Five health professors have written a letter to the Government concerned about company EY leading a tobacco tax review.

The letter accuses the company of having a conflict of interest after it worked for tobacco companies overseas.

However, EY says the work of its international firms are very separate.

The company says it takes conflict of interest very seriously and while work might happen overseas, the policy of its New Zealand division rules out consulting for tobacco companies.

"The Ministry of Health has assured me that there is no conflict of interest," Associate Health Minister Jenny Salesa told 1 NEWS.

The health experts opposed to the company being appointed to the review disagree.

They claim EY is doing work for British American Tobacco in Canada, which is arguing that taxes should not go up.

The tobacco tax report is due at the end of the month.
