The Housing Minister is confident he'll reach his winter housing target by the end of September.

New figures to the end of July show Phil Twyford is just 250 homes off meeting his 1500 home promise.

"We're well on track to deliver on that target," Mr Twyford told 1 NEWS.

There are three components to the target.

Short term accommodation with wrap around social services, that's exceeding its target by 64

Permanent places for those who've been homeless for a long time, which are behind by 39.

And places for those on housing waiting lists that are short by 265.

However, not everyone is impressed by the Government's progress.

"It is a band aid solution and is muddling with statistics. Transitional housing should not be considered as part of the numbers being properly housed," Auckland Action Against Poverty's Ricardo Menéndez March says.
