Canterbury overcome staunch Steamers to win tense Mitre 10 Cup clash

September 1, 2018

Canterbury have fended off a valiant performance from Bay of Plenty to earn their second win of the 2018 Mitre 10 Cup 31-19.

The Steamers put on a strong performance for home fans at Tauranga Domain this afternoon, with tries to Chase Tiatia, Tyler Ardron and Terrence Hepetema giving the hosts a 19-14 lead with 25 minutes left in the match.

However, Canterbury found another gear and took the lead thanks to winger Josh McKay's second try of the afternoon.

From there, the Cantabrian forward pack began to assert their dominance in the fixture, earning a penalty try after a scrum collapsed inches from Bay of Plenty's line.

Brett Cameron sealed the win for the visitors with a penalty in the 67th minute.

With the win, Canterbury move to third in the Premiership behind Auckland and Wellington while Bay of Plenty sit in second in the Championship.
