Brother of NZ man shot dead by Queensland police calls shooting 'disgusting' and 'unjust'

The brother of a mentally disabled New Zealand man who was shot dead by police in central Queensland yesterday has called the shooting "disgusting" and "unjust".

Police were called to a domestic disturbance at a Norman Gardens, Rockhampton address at 7.10pm.

The man, who police described as being armed with a knife, was alone at the property when two officers arrived.

He was shot two or three times and he died at the scene, his brother told 1 NEWS.

The man's brother said he was diagnosed with the mental age of a 14-year-old and had suffered a severe head injury in the past.

He also suggested that his brother was well-known to police, and that they were well aware of his situation when they shot him.

Detective Superintendent Ronald Van Saane told 9 News he couldn't confirm reports police had been told the man was armed with a gun.

"It's been a traumatic event for everyone involved and we've provided support for the police officers involved, as well as the next of kin," he said.

The man's mother said she was told by police that they "shot to kill".

Police have declined to release CCTV footage from the incident, which is under investigation by the Ethical Standards Command.
