A man has been rescued from an Otago lake by members of the public after he crashed his ute into it.

Police say the man, aged in his sixties, crashed the vehicle into Lake Dunstan at around 5.15pm today while he was driving towards Cromwell on State Highway 8.

Members of the public in the area raced to the driver’s aid and helped get him out of the vehicle and out of the lake.

The man - the sole occupant of the ute - was taken to Dunstan Hospital in a serious condition.

Constable Leon Burdett says the members of the public did a wonderful job helping the man before emergency services arrived.

"I’d just really like to thank the group who rushed to the man's aid and got him out of the lake, we're really grateful," he says.

The ute has been removed from the lake and an investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.
