Spain have been the first casualty of a World Cup upset, as hosts Russia sent the 2010 champions home early, taking a 4-3 penalty shootout victory in Moscow this morning.

Joining the hosts in the quarter-finals, are Croatia, who themselves survived a penalty shootout for the ages against Denmark, emerging from the round of 16 with a 3-2 win.

In other results, Uruguay ended Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal's dream of taking home the Jules Rimet trophy, while France did the same to Lionel Messi and Argentina.

All eyes now turn to Brazil, who face Mexico in what should be a classic, before tournament dark horses Belgium meet Japan.

Take a look at 1 NEWS NOW's World Cup power rankings here:

Today's results:

Russia 1-1 Spain (Russia win 4-3 on penalties).
