All Blacks captain Kieran Read has added his name to the list of those calling for the end of Super Rugby's conference system, as he bids to make his long awaited return to the Crusaders this weekend.

In recent times, the Super Rugby conference system has earned the ire of fans and commentators alike, favouring teams based solely for geographical reason, and not rewarding on field performances.

For example, the Waratahs hold on to third spot on the overall competition ladder with 39 points as leaders of the Australian conference, while South Africa's Lions sit second for the same reason.

Meanwhile, the Hurricanes occupy fourth spot, with 45 points, more than both of the two teams above them.

Speaking to RadioLIVE, Read spoke in favour of Super Rugby returning to a round robin format.

"I like the idea of a full round robin where you play everyone once, but we can't continue with this conference system moving forward," Read said.

"They have to work something out there before expansion. A round robin or something along those lines would be fairer for everyone and result in a better product for the fans who turn up every week."

Read is hoping to make his return to action, having underwent back surgery in the off season.
