A teenager has been charged with manslaughter after allegedly assaulting a security guard at a South Auckland supermarket who later died from his injuries.

Police say they were made aware of an incident at a supermarket in Papakura where a security guard was assaulted yesterday.

The victim was then taken to Middlemore Hospital but died in hospital early this morning from his injuries.

Police have arrested a 17-year-old male in connection with the alleged assault and he has been charged with manslaughter.

According to the NZ Herald the guard was working at a Papakura Countdown when he was allegedly knocked to the ground from a single punch delivered by a youth he had been investigating for suspicious behaviour.

The punch is said to have been captured on CCTV and happened in front of other shoppers.
