Transpower says power has been restored to the national grid following a fault that left around 22,000 properties in Rotorua without supply.
In a 5pm update, Transpower said it may take up to 45 minutes for power to be restored to local lines.
It said outlets should be treated as live at all times and it apologised for the inconvenience caused by today's outage.
Earlier power company Unison said it was a Transpower-related fault and the two agencies were working to restore power to customers as quickly as possible.
Police said traffic lights in the Rotorua CBD were not working due to the outage so motorists were asked to be patient, take their time and follow the road rules.
Heavy rain in the Bay of Plenty last weekend forced the evacuation of at least 30 homes in Ngongotaha on Sunday and 32 people were trapped at the Agrodome until they were rescued.
