A male pedestrian has died after being hit by a car on State Highway 1 in Levin this morning.

The accident occurred at 6am this morning.

Police said in a statement the road is closed as emergency services work at the scene.

Southbound traffic is currently being diverted down Cambridge Street into Tararua Road.
