Hamilton City Councillor Dave Macpherson has again told the government that Hamilton needs a regional fuel tax just as much as Auckland to fix its infrastructure problems.
The government has already declined to implement a fuel tax, with Finance Minister Grant Robertson reportedly "quite firm" in his position, Hamilton Mayor Andrew King said in February.
Other councillors backed Mr Macpherson's suggestion to go back to government with another request.
Mr Macpherson today told a select committee in Auckland this morning that Hamilton's problems rival Auckland.
The tax could generate $150m for the Hamilton region, he said, within the next decade, and he insisted that waiting until 2021, when Hamilton will become eligible for the tax, is too long.
