Some residents in the middle of the country were rattled awake early Thursday morning after a 4.3 magnitude earthquake.

It struck at 12.08am, centred 20 kilometres south of Seddon at the top of the South Island.

One Twitter user described getting a "huge fright" from the shake.

"I thought someone kicked my bed. Nope just Mother Nature keeping us on our toes," they wrote.

The earthquake hit at a depth of 10 kilometres.

GeoNet says on its website that the shaking was moderate.

More than 160 people, from Kaikoura in the South Island to Lower Hutt in the North Island, said they felt the late-night tremor.
