Counties Manukau police are looking into a spate of arsons in Pukekohe, Drury and Papakura and are asking for help in identifying a suspect caught on security camera.
Police said in a statement that there have been 16 suspicious fire in those areas within the past ten days.
Some have been at show homes or other vacant properties or construction sites, and police say the damages are likely in the hundreds of thousands of dollars - maybe more.
A primary school has also been targeted and police have stepped up patrols in high-risk areas.
Inspector Dave Glossop said that the fires are very concerning, and they want help in identifying a suspect caught on CCTV.
"While the photo does not show the suspect's face, we believe that someone may recognise the clothing and build of the offender," Mr Glossop said.
"We urge our community to contact 111 immediately if they notice any suspicious activity particularly in the Counties Manukau South area from Papakura to Pukekohe."
Detective senior sergeant Mal Hassall can be contacted on 021 191 2065, or information can be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
