Video: 'It was a paddock before' – Massive sinkhole opens up on Rotorua farm after huge deluge of rain

May 1, 2018

A gargantuan 200m-long sinkhole has opened up on a Rotorua farm after a deluge of rain caused a state of emergency to be declared in the region on Sunday.

Tumunui South farm manager Colin Tremain told the NZ Herald that the sinkhole was 200m long, 30m wide and had a depth of 20m.

"It goes over half the race so if any of the workers had been going full speed along the race before it was discovered, they would have been in a bit of trouble," Mr Tremain said.

The farmer says no one was near the paddock on Sunday when the sinkhole occurred so isn't sure exactly when the ground opened up.

However, he believes there is no danger to livestock from the sinkhole.

"Cows aren't stupid. They've been grazing in that paddock today although there is tape around the hole."
