Two young motor racing drivers have just been awarded one of the richest sporting scholarships going.

Fifteen ambitious young drivers squared off on the track for a shot at the $85,000 CareVets scholarships to compete in next summer's six-round Toyota 86 series.

The scholarships of a funded drive cover everything involved including a car and an engineer, and TVNZ1's Seven Sharp was there when they were announced.

The scholarships were awarded to 20-year-old Aaran Crighton, and the most junior among the contenders, Callum Hedge, who said he's "about 18 months away" from driving on the road.

Callum said winning the scholarship was a "very big day for me" and he was "privileged, very privileged".

Pressure on the contenders extended beyond the driver's seat to fitness training to find the two most deserving of the financial assistance of Hamilton vet Dr Keith Houston.

Dr Houston described himself as "an integrated spectator" of motorsport.

"There's a lot of talent here but they need a chance," he said.

Also among the scholarship contenders was Ronan Murphy son of Kiwi motorsport legend Greg Murphy.

"These young drivers who have got this immense amount of talent don't necessarily have the other resources required to make the step. And we've got talent oozing out from all over New Zealand," Greg Murphy said.
