US comedian Michelle Wolf delivered a blistering critique of press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders at the annual dinner of the White House Correspondents' Association on Saturday evening.
Wolf mocked Sanders' truthfulness, appearance and Southern roots, even though she was sat just metres away.
The act had some in the audience laughing but left others in stony silence.
US President Donald Trump himself skipped the event, preferring to criticise journalists and others during a campaign-style rally near Detroit.
He then tweeted on Sunday that the dinner was "a very big, boring bust...the so-called comedian really "bombed."
