Twenty police recruits will officially start their training for the first time in Auckland instead of Wellington.

Police say the move away from the traditional Police College is to stop the barrier of distance and increase the range of candidates.

A pilot programme will mean recruits don't have to spend four months in Porirua being trained. (Source: Other)

Classes including driving, firearms and defensive tactics will be split between Unitec and the North Shore policing centre.

A powhiri will welcome the new recruits this morning.
